Transforming a once derelict barn into a stunning two-bedroom home.
Cameron Bosque Brookes are responsible for the interior work on this project.
Residential
This self-build family home, set in a Conservation Area, is inspired by the past.
The client’s love of manor-style properties and intricate traditional detailing has led to a design that feels historic yet contemporary.
The biggest issue with 2d plans and 3d images is that our clients struggle to understand the designs concept and when you are paying thousands of pounds on a building project this is not good enough. We use virtual reality as part of the design process to show you options and allow you to walk around the proposals as if you would in real life. You get a sense of how the completed building will feel and the sense of space.

We have been delighted about the way Grant and the team at CBBA, have understood our aspirations for our additional space, and how they have translated that into a building design that we are really excited about. We had a fantastic experience with CBB Architects planning our single storey extension. With this being the first project like this that we have undertook, we felt we were in great hands since Grant was informative and always responded quickly to any questions. He took the time to understand exactly what we wanted and offered his own advice and creative ideas that really improved the final design. We would have no hesitation in recommending CBB architects.Posted on Google Mohammed AzamuddinTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I had an outstanding experience working with Grant Cameron from Cameron Bosque Brookes Architects. From the first conversation, he was exceptionally kind, attentive, and genuinely listened to our needs and constraints. His approach was pragmatic and solution-oriented, consistently translating my vision into thoughtful, buildable designs without compromising on quality or aesthetics. Communication was seamless providing clear cost transparency and smart value-for-money. I would recommend them to anyone seeking a client-focused, reliable, and budget-conscious architect.
While the building was extensively rebuilt in the 19th century by architect W. G. Habershon, it retains several medieval features. The oldest surviving part is the 15th-century west tower, and other medieval materials and elements can be found in the chancel, nave, and aisles. The RSPB nature reserve headquarters are housed in The Lodge, a house built in 1870 for Arthur Wellesley Peel by architect Henry Clutton. The style is described as “Tudorbethan,” and the house is complemented by formal gardens that were remodelled in the Arts and Crafts style in the 1930s.
The site also includes the earlier “Swiss Cottage,” which serves as the reserve’s visitor centre. The town centre, particularly around the Market Square, shows a mix of styles. Older shops and former public houses exhibit features such as historic shop fronts, dormer windows, and a varied roofline. Significant historic buildings include the Queens Head and Dick Turpin public houses. The Town Hall, a building never used as a town hall but built for public events in 1906, is also a local landmark.
The town expanded rapidly from the 1970s onwards with new residential developments, incorporating more contemporary housing design. There are numerous Grade II listed properties, from cottages to farmhouses, in and around Sandy, showcasing various periods of domestic architecture. Modern developments have often incorporated features designed to be sensitive to the area’s existing character, with some projects addressing challenges such as noise from nearby industry.
The architecture in Sandy, Bedfordshire, features a mix of styles, from the medieval origins of its parish church to the Victorian-era Lodge and more modern residential areas. Historic buildings, including listed properties and former public houses, can be found throughout the town and in surrounding areas. St. Swithun’s Church, the parish church, is Sandy’s most architecturally significant building, with roots dating back to before the Norman Conquest.
