Virtual Reality Vault

The biggest issue with 2d plans and 3d images is that our clients struggle to understand the designs concept and when you are paying thousands of pounds on a building project this is not good enough. We use virtual reality as part of the design process to show you options and allow you to walk around the proposals as if you would in real life. You get a sense of how the completed building will feel and the sense of space.

Architecture in Chelmsford

The architecture of Chelmsford, Essex, is a compelling narrative of transformation, blending its ancient roots as a Roman settlement with its prestigious legacy as the birthplace of radio and its modern status as a vibrant, growing city. At the heart of the city’s historic core stands the 15th-century Chelmsford Cathedral, a masterpiece of Perpendicular Gothic architecture featuring intricate flint flushwork and a rhythmic limestone exterior that serves as a sentinel for the region’s medieval craftsmanship. This heritage is mirrored in the surrounding villages like Writtle, where timber-framed Tudor houses and traditional Essex weatherboarding provide a picturesque contrast to the city’s industrial milestones.

Chelmsford’s architectural evolution took a monumental leap during the late 19th and early 20th centuries with the rise of the Marconi Company; the New Street factory remains a landmark of industrial heritage, showcasing the functional yet grand brickwork typical of the Edwardian era. In recent years, the city has embraced a bold, contemporary aesthetic, exemplified by the sleek glass façades and open-plan steel structures of the Bond Street development and the sustainable, high-density residential designs of the Beaulieu and Greater Beaulieu Park estates.

This modern layer of the city prioritises light, connectivity, and environmental performance, often utilising a palette of Gault brick and modern composites to bridge the gap between historic charm and 21st-century urbanity. Successfully designing within the Chelmsford landscape requires a deep understanding of these diverse influences, ensuring that new additions—whether they are sensitive loft conversions in Old Moulsham or innovative commercial hubs in the city centre—respect the scale and materiality of the local conservation areas while meeting the rigorous demands of modern planning and sustainability. Ultimately, Chelmsford’s architecture is defined by this continuous dialogue between its ecclesiastical beginnings, its world-changing industrial past, and its future-facing commitment to bold, sustainable urban growth.

As a leading RIBA Chartered architect practice in Chelmsford we have in depth knowledge of the local conservation areas and gaining planning permission by working closely with Chelmsford City Council. We understand through firsthand experience the complexities of the Chelmsford City Council Local Plan. Our specialist architectural services cover all of Chelmsford: We proudly serve clients in Old Moulsham, Beaulieu, Broomfield, Great Baddow, Galleywood, Sandon, Little Waltham, and the wider Essex region.
