Virtual Reality Vault

The biggest issue with 2d plans and 3d images is that our clients struggle to understand the designs concept and when you are paying thousands of pounds on a building project this is not good enough. We use virtual reality as part of the design process to show you options and allow you to walk around the proposals as if you would in real life. You get a sense of how the completed building will feel and the sense of space.

Architecture in Bury St Edmunds

The architecture in Bury St Edmunds is often referred to as the “Jewel in the Crown of Suffolk,” offers a striking contrast to its neighbour, Newmarket. While Newmarket is defined by the horse racing industry, Bury St Edmunds is a masterclass in monastic history, medieval planning, and refined Georgian civic architecture. The Norman Grid is a Medieval Foundation and at the heart of Bury St Edmunds is one of the most famous examples of medieval town planning in England. Laid out by Abbot Baldwin in the 11th century, the “Norman Grid” consists of a series of intersecting streets that still function as the town’s primary commercial hub.

Abbeygate Street and Guildhall Street are beautiful thoroughfares which contain some of the most intact timber-framed buildings in Suffolk, alongside the Guildhall, which is the oldest continuously used civic building in the country. The Abbey Ruins was once one of the wealthiest Benedictine monasteries in Europe, the ruins now sit within the Abbey Gardens. The Norman Tower (c. 1120–1148) remains one of the finest examples of Norman religious architecture in the UK, serving as a gateway to the cathedral precinct.

Regency elegance and classical influence is seen when the town underwent a significant architectural “refacing” during the 18th and 19th centuries, giving many medieval buildings the grand, symmetrical facades seen today. The Theatre Royal which was designed by William Wilkins (who also designed the National Gallery in London), it is the only surviving Regency-era theatre in the UK. The Athenaeum, which is a simply stunning Neo-Classical assembly room on Angel Hill that hosted figures like Charles Dickens. It represents the height of Georgian social architecture with its high ceilings and ornate plasterwork.

St Edmundsbury Cathedral, which is ancient in origin, the cathedral’s iconic central tower was only completed in 2005, a rare and successful example of modern Neo-Gothic craftsmanship. Bury St Edmunds also embraces its industrial heritage and modern growth and can be seen with the Greene King Brewery, which is a local landmark featuring red-brick Victorian industrial architecture and a 1930s draught beer cellar. The Arc & The Apex is a development which standard out which replaced the former cattle market. It features contemporary timber-framed gables and a sand-cast aluminium department store, designed to blend into the town’s historic scale.

Moyse’s Hall is one of the oldest domestic buildings in East Anglia (dating back to 1180), this structure demonstrates the transition from Romanesque to Gothic domestic design. As a leading architectural firm in Bury St Edmunds, we understand that building in a town with a 1,000-year history requires a delicate touch. The “Jewel in the Crown of Suffolk” offers a unique challenge: harmonising the medieval timber-frames of the Norman Grid with the crisp, symmetrical lines of Regency and Georgian architecture. Cameron Bosque Brookes architects have extensive experience in Bury St Edmunds and a deep understanding of the local heritage conservation area and obtaining planning permissions working with West Suffolk district council.
