Cameron Bosque Brookes Architects is leading the sensitive historic restoration, extension, and full internal reconfiguration of The Vane Arms in Thorpe Malsor, near Kettering. Operating as Lead Architects, Principal Designers, heritage architects, listed building architects, and hospitality architects, our practice was appointed to take this 300-year-old Grade II listed country pub and restaurant through RIBA Stages 4 to 6, guiding the project through detailed technical design, on-site construction oversight, health and safety coordination, and contract administration toward its targeted completion in 2027.
Closed since 2021 and left in a severely dilapidated state, the historic building required a rigorous fabric-first conservation strategy alongside high-end commercial design. Working as Lead Architects within strict listed building consent parameters, our technical packages combine sensitive timber frame repair, breathability-focused lime plaster work, and structural stabilization with a contemporary kitchen and dining extension. As Principal Designers, we proactively managed structural risk and site safety, ensuring the safe execution of complex works on a vulnerable historic frame. The internal architectural layout breathes new life into the charming village pub, restoring original period fireplaces, exposed stonework, and historic timbers while integrating state-of-the-art commercial back-of-house facilities to support a modern culinary venue.
Delivering commercial viability within sensitive historic settings requires balancing conservation requirements with operator functionality. Our team engineered seamless transitions between the original 18th-century structure and the new architectural additions, improving guest flow, accessibility, and dining capacity without sacrificing the authentic character that makes country pubs so cherished. By managing complex specialist trade packages, heritage approvals, structural safety, and on-site building execution, our practice ensures that this landmark local venue is safeguarded for future generations.
