The client’s love of manor-style properties and intricate traditional detailing has led to a design that feels historic yet contemporary.
The biggest issue with 2d plans and 3d images is that our clients struggle to understand the designs concept and when you are paying thousands of pounds on a building project this is not good enough. We use virtual reality as part of the design process to show you options and allow you to walk around the proposals as if you would in real life. You get a sense of how the completed building will feel and the sense of space.
The designs emphasize natural materials, skilled craftsmanship, and designs that integrate with the surrounding landscape. Homes often feature whitewashed, roughcast rendered walls, gables, dormer windows, hanging tiles, and timber boarding. An emphasis was placed on using building materials sourced from the locality. Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation plays a role in managing the town’s streets and new developments to preserve its distinct architectural character. It is a unique charitable organization that owns and manages the majority of the Letchworth Garden City estate.
By generating income from its commercial and residential property portfolio, it reinvests the profits back into the community to provide local services, support, and amenities. Successor to the original company First Garden City Limited, which was created in 1903 by Ebenezer Howard to build the world’s first Garden City. The Foundation funds and manages a wide range of initiatives to enhance the quality of life for the town’s residents, including: operating venues such as the Broadway Cinema & Theatre, Broadway Gallery, and Standalone Farm.
The Foundation manages and maintains the town’s extensive green spaces, including the Garden City Greenway, parks, and meadows. It provides grants and funding to local charities and community groups to support projects that benefit residents. Also as part of its Strategy 2028, the Foundation is focusing on initiatives that make Letchworth a great place for young people to grow up.
Letchworth’s architecture is defined by the pioneering Garden City movement, featuring Arts and Crafts-inspired designs with features like roughcast walls, gables, and casement windows, aimed at creating a harmonious, sunlight-filled living environment. Key architects like Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin shaped this early 20th-century vision, reflected in the town’s characteristic vernacular style and its initial Cheap Cottages Exhibition which showcased innovative domestic design.
